Being aware of the power of image in film-making and its importance in shaping and building contemporary societies, the Cultural Services have been particularly active in the various aspects constituting the development of cinema (film production, cinema education, professional training).
In the field of film production, short films, features and documentaries are sponsored through the Cinema Advisory Committee. A significant number of Cypriot films sponsored by the State are screened in movie theatres and awarded at various important film festivals around the world.
For the purpose of promoting Cyprus as a filming destination, and also to advertise Cypriot films, a pavilion is maintained at the International Short Film Festival in Drama, the Thessaloniki International Film Festival and the Cannes International Film Festival.
With the aim to further develop local film creation, to attract foreign film makers in Cyprus and to awaken private sector’s interest (foreign and local) for investments in the field of audiovisual arts, the Cultural Services have developed and are promoting a series of measures and incentives.
A multifaceted action is also shown with respect to education and theoretical training on cinema. To pursue these goals, various festivals and retrospective tributes to filmmakers and cinema movements are organized/co-organized in collaboration with Rialto Theatre, Theatro Ena, film clubs, the Cyprus Directors’ Guild and other cultural institutions. At the same time, various non-profit organizations, which contribute to the development of knowledge and education on cinema, are subsidized.
Amongst the numerous events that are organized, co-organized and subsidized, the following stand out: the “Cyprus Film Days” International Festival, the International Short Film Festival of Cyprus, the “Views of the World” International Countryside Animafest, the Limassol Documentary Festival, the “Images and Views of Alternative Cinema” Festival and the Summer Movie Marathon.
In the context of developing cinema in rural areas, cinema theatres in the countryside and the Cypriot Cinematheque of Pelathousa are supported on an annual basis, while the organizing of film screenings in the countryside by rural municipalities/communities is subsidized.
In addition, the Cultural Services subsidize directors/producers, who participate in professional seminars, workshops and international film festivals abroad. At the same time, they oversee the implementation of the Creative Europe Programme, through which the professional development of various aspects of the audiovisual production is promoted.
