Cyprus as a member state of the European Union is committed to ensure the balance between human activities and environmental conservation. Essential precondition for the successful promotion of any political action in such crucial areas, as the environment and sustainable development, is the environmental education and awareness among our students. In Secondary Education, Environmental and Health education are highly valued, in order to enable students as future citizens to understand that the improvement of the quality of life in our country depends upon ensuring the conservation of the natural environment. Also, students understand that their personal actions and choices can decisively affect this field.
The Secondary Education Division is committed to modernizing and overhauling the public school and public education, so that it can respond effectively to the needs of our children and, also, to the new challenges posed by the 21st century. Environmental education for secondary education is a continuous process through which students are made aware of their surroundings and gain knowledge, values, skills, experience and the motivation to act individually and collectively to solve environmental problems.
The Secondary Education Division aims towards educating our students to be able to investigate and to think critically, to participate in decision-making processes, to intervene powerfully and democratically in society, aiming towards the changes required for shaping sustainability policies. In addition, it is important for our students to negotiate and to plan individually and collectively the social conditions for sustainability, specifying autonomously their present needs and safeguarding their future and that of future generations.
In Secondary Education, Environmental education is promoted both interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary, through the curricula of different disciplines such as Biology, Geography, Physics, Chemistry, Modern Greek etc. Well-organized environmental education programs provide opportunities for students to be informed, become aware and develop personal motivation so as to become environmentally responsible and active citizens.
