The Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education and Culture subsidizes various organizations, including choirs, music groups, music foundations, associations, cultural institutions and non-profit corporations to implement through their annual activity important aspects of public cultural state policy. State financial support facilitates participation in cultural events and festivals abroad. Equal importance is given to funding performances and events held by Cypriot cultural agents and individual artists abroad. Cypriot musicians and performers, who live and work overseas as well as musicologists, receive sponsorship for their local or international activities. One of these activities is their participation in music conferences or symposia abroad. Purchase of digital records is another form of support aimed at musicians and music creators. Significant activities in relation to music publishing are also taken, aiming to safeguard and promote works of important representatives of the local music scene.
The Ministry of Education and Culture supports the “Pafos Aphrodite Festival” which is one of the most successful music festivals in Cyprus and contributes to cultural decentralization, the development of local communities, and the enhancement of cultural tourism.
Aiming at promoting youth music talent, the Ministry of Education and Culture runs the Musical Talent Development Programme under the Artistic Direction of distinguished violinist and music teacher Matheos Kariolou. The objective of this pioneer programme is to locate children, aged between 3-10 years, with a particular talent in music, with the aim of substantially upgrading musical education and developing musical culture in Cyprus.
Since its establishment in 2007, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation demonstrates a continuous presence in the local music scene. The Foundation set itself the objective of further developing the activities of its constituent parts, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra. The Ministry of Education and Culture is represented in the Foundation’s Governing Board.
In addition, the Cultural Services participate in the Steering Committee of the European Youth Orchestra (EUYO). In the context of the Cultural Services’ contribution to the institution of the European Union Youth Orchestra, young musicians from Cyprus are given the opportunity to participate in concerts of the EUYO.
Last but not least, the Music Information Centre started its operation in July 2008, following a decision by the Council of Ministers. The primary objective of the Centre is the creation of a dynamic Cyprus Music Archive in the form of a user friendly data base.
